Main|Options|Pair Order & Size

The Pair Order & Size page allows the user to control the ordering, category and size of the Q&A pairs to be chosen from the overall file for the upcoming study session by setting the options below.  The mode of the GoTo feature is also controlled on this page.  These choices apply to the first four of the main Q&A modes but affect the Leitner Box System mode somewhat differently. See the Leitner Box System topic for more detail.

Repetition allows the choice of one of the following modes:

One Pass

In this mode, WinFlash keeps track of each pass through the Q&A files.  If the editor is opened and Q&A pairs added during a pass, these Q&A pairs will not be added to the current session, but will be included if the pass is restarted (switch to Continuous, run a couple of Q&A pairs and then switch back to One Pass). After each available Question has been asked at least once, the user is given a choice of continuing or closing the current Q&A file. In Scholar and Educator the user also has the option of running the pass again viewing only the missed Q&A pairs from the previous pass (this option is only available in Ask All Questions Equally Often mode).

Continuous

This mode allows  Q&A pairs to be reviewed indefinitely without querying the user at the end of a pass.

In both modes, WinFlash tracks the Q&A pairs remaining unasked in each of the possible sets from which Q&A pairs are being drawn.  For instance, in Frequency Based On Priority List mode, Q&A pairs are drawn from both Priority and non-Priority Q&A pairs based on the Frequency setting.  Consider a 10-pair file of which pairs 9 and 10 are on the priority list and the Ask A Priority Question frequency is set to 75%.  Assuming the Order setting is Numerical and Direction is Forward, the following sequence of Q&A pairs might result:

9, 1, 10, 2, 3, 9, 4, 5, 6, 10, 9, 10, 7, 8

If Order were set to Random, the sequence might be:

10, 2, 9, 7, 3, 10, 4, 6, 9, 5, 10, 9, 8, 1

Because of the higher frequency weighting for Priority Q&A pairs, they are asked 3 times as often on a per-pair frequency as are the non-Priority pairs and hence repeat their cycle within a single complete cycling of the non-Priority Q&A pairs.  Clear as mud, eh??  This same type of behavior pertains to the other two Q&A modes where the Frequency Setting is considered: Frequency Based On Range and Frequency Based On History.

Repeats of the same Q&A pair number are locked out except for the case where there is only one Q&A pair in the group selected and the Frequency for that group is set to 100%.

Pair Size Limit allows the choice of the maximum size allowed for a Q&A pair.

2000 Characters

In this mode WinFlash limits the total text displayed in the left-hand Q and A displays INCLUDING HIDDEN TAGS, SUPPORT FILE PATHS, ETC. to 2000 characters.  You MUST use this mode if you want your files to be usable on pre-v6.0 editions of WinFlash or Educator.

8200 Characters

In this mode WinFlash limits the total text displayed in the left-hand Q and A displays INCLUDING HIDDEN TAGS, SUPPORT FILE PATHS, ETC. to 8200 characters.  An additional limit of 4095 characters is imposed on the total length of the Q and A strings individually.  I.e. you can't have a 200 character Q and an 8000 character A.

Before using this setting, consider whether you may require backward compatibility with pre-v6.0 versions of the program.  Only program versions 6.0 and later can use files created with this setting. Beginning with version 7.0, this setting is the default when new files are created.

Order allows the choice of one of the following modes:

Numerical

In this mode WinFlash presents the Q&A pairs to the user in numerical order within the chosen group - see above.

Random

In this mode WinFlash selects each Q&A pair to be displayed from the chosen group at random - see above.

Direction allows the choice of one of the following modes when Order is Numerical - it has no effect when Order is Random:

Forward

In this mode WinFlash presents the Q&A pairs to the user in increasing numerical order within the chosen group.

Reverse

In this mode WinFlash presents the Q&A pairs to the user in decreasing numerical order within the chosen group.

Mode-specific Settings

This pushbutton brings up a dialog tailored to the current Q&A mode that allows setting the frequency for the session and for History mode, the promotional "hurdles".  Select the mode of interest below to see a description of the Options dialog associated with the corresponding Q&A mode:

Frequency Based On Priority List

Frequency Based On Range

Frequency Based On History

Leitner Box System

Go To Mode allows the choice of how the program proceeds (when in Numerical mode - see above) after a GoTo is executed.  If the box is checked, the program continues on with the Q&A pair following the pair that is jumped to.

E.g. This shows the sequence for a jump to Q&A pair 7 executed from Q&A pair 3:

1,2,3,7,8,9....

If the box is not checked, the program continues with the next Q&A pair following the Q&A pair that was jumped FROM.

E.g. This shows the sequence for a jump to Q&A pair 7 executed from Q&A pair 3:

1,2,3,7,4,5....

Range allows the choice of one of the following modes:

Use Entire File

In this mode WinFlash selects from the entire file, with Disabled Q&A pairs included or not depending on the setting of Options|Q&A Modes|Include Disabled Pairs.

From Question __ To __

In this mode WinFlash selects ONLY from within the numeric range indicated - UNLESS the Q&A mode is Frequency Based On Range - in which case this setting defines which Q&A pairs are inside the Range (these numbers, inclusive) and which Q&A pairs are outside the Range.  WinFlash then proceeds to pick from BOTH groups depending on the Frequency setting.

From Leitner Box __ To __

In this mode WinFlash selects ONLY from the range of Leitner Boxes indicated. It is assumed that this setting will be used only when using the Leitner Box System mode - otherwise it would be equivalent to Use Entire File.

By Category

In this mode WinFlash chooses ONLY from Q&A pairs within the selected categories  - UNLESS the Q&A mode is Frequency Based On Range - in which case this setting defines which Q&A pairs are inside Range (those Q&A pairs matching the category) and which Q&A pairs are outside the Range.  WinFlash then proceeds to pick from BOTH groups depending on the Frequency setting. Click the Select Ranges button to change which categories are selected.
