WinFlash Basic/Scholar/Educator 7.0

Print this Topic Return to chapter overview

Starting with v7.0, WinFlash became available in three forms - Basic, Scholar and Educator.  The features below are divided into three categories, reflecting the three program levels.

The following new features are available in WinFlash Educator:

Educator can now import directly from text, delimited text, JTutor and HandyCard files allowing easier creation of study files from already-existing materials

Educator can export to text, delimited text, JTutor and HandyCard files as well - allowing you to study the materials created with Educator on multiple platforms

.Flz files now store all accompanying .fld settings within the .FLZ file itself. You no longer need include a .fld in order to set colors, fonts, etc. WinFlash creates a companion .fld for the .FLZ file the first time it is opened on the user's machine but does NOT transfer any Q&A pair statistics from the original .fld file removing the necessity of scrubbing the .fld file prior to including it in the distribution build

Introductions can now have a sound file to accompany them

The Create Composite .FLU Files tool can now convert all standard Q&A pairs to FIB Q&A pairs automatically.  This allows using standard Q&A pairs for your files to maintain flexibility in using the two new options below while being able to create source files for use in the creation of .FLT test files (whose Q&A pairs must all be automatically scoreable NON-standard Q&A pairs)

Run a standard-pair file in multiple choice mode with the multiple choices automatically generated from the other Q&A pairs' answers - great for things like vocabulary, state capitals, etc.!

Run a standard-pair file in fill-in mode with the required answer generated from the text portion of the standard Q&A pair. Similarly, run a file created in fill-in mode as standard when you don't feel like typing in the answers!

The following new features are available in WinFlash Scholar and Educator:

A new Q&A pair type - a modification of the fill-in-the-blank type - can handle up to six answers within a single Q&A pair.  This makes it ideal for use in foreign language study of verb conjugation, but also has many other possible uses. Optionally check for the order of the answers given

Check your files with a powerful Spell Checker and Thesaurus - you can even use your already-created Microsoft Word custom dictionaries.  Download additional free dictionaries for use with many other languages - including British (definitely another language :-)), French, German and Spanish as well as specialized dictionaries for technical, medical and legal use

Table-style view of the file has been added to the editor - complete with keys for what features are used in each Q&A pair

Sophisticated Search and Replace tool usable in both study mode and edit mode

Printing of flashcards, tables and tests has been greatly enhanced:

 * Offset adjustment allows you to correct for printer alignment differences

 * Print preview feature lets you quickly check your output

 * Single cards of arbitrary size (3x5, 4x6, etc.) can now be printed - real flashcards!

 * 1x2, 1x3, 2x2, 2x3, 2x4 and 2x5 formats supported on standard pages

 * Printer font and screen font settings now stored separately - no need to switch back and forth

 * Optional cut lines for multi-card sheets

 * Horizontal and vertical centering options for text cards

 * Long Q&A pairs now continue from page to page when printing out tables

The popular Cheers & Jeers feature now supports up to 50 different cheers and jeers

The One Pass|Ask All Pairs Equally Often mode now supports multiple reruns - each one showing only the misses from the previous pass

The following new features are available in all three WinFlash versions:

Tip Of The Day presents handy pointers on using WinFlash to supercharge your study efforts!

Browser mode allows easy, non-scored, cruising of the file

Fast Flash mode can display up to 5 questions per second - depending on the content - for improving speedy recognition of information (vocabulary words, zip codes, etc.)

Keep Question Visible option holds the Question dialog on screen while the answer is displayed.  Easy back and forth reference aids initial familiarization with the file

Use Named Range now supports the simultaneous selection of multiple ranges from within the current file

True Yes/No Q&A pair type covers those situations that don't quite fit the True/False framing

Hints and Comments can now be launchable files - any file that WinFlash supports as a sound file OR a regular executable file

Displayed .RTF support files - including intro's - can be taken full screen and then returned by clicking on them - just like the graphics displays in previous versions

New hot key, Ctrl-r, for resetting the score in the status bar

Many editor ease-of-use enhancements including smart selection of editor page when switching from study mode, smart selection of secondary items when using other-than-standard Q&A pair types and automatic restoration of the current open Q&A pair to the front when closing the editor

Note: Old  .FLU files will work just fine with v7.0.  Simply open them with the new program and the new entries for the .FLD file will be automatically created the first time you open the file in v7.0.  However, files created with v7.0 may NOT be compatible when used with older versions.  See Backward Compatibility for detailed information on this topic.
