Main|Options|Colors/Fonts/Kbds

This page of the Options dialog contains the options described below.  All selections are stored on a file-by-file basis except the Menus/Dialog font that is stored globally.

Set Main Window Color

Pressing this button opens the standard Windows color-selection dialog box.  The selected color is used for WinFlash's main window's background for the currently open file. You can also create custom colors and save them for future use by clicking on the Define Custom Colors button in the Color Dialog.

Note: Since the main window is intentionally restricted to a small, convenient, tool-bar type display, this color will only appear as a small stripe across the bottom of the window, assuming the window has been sized large enough in the vertical dimension to show more than just the toolbar buttons.

Set Question Background Color

Pressing this button opens the standard Windows color-selection dialog box.  The selected color is used for the Question dialog's background for the currently open file.  This background is also used in the editor for the Question Text edit box and the Multiple-Choice edit boxes. You can also create custom colors and save them for future use by clicking on the Define Custom Colors button in the Color Dialog.

Set Answer Background Color

Pressing this button opens the standard Windows color-selection dialog box.  The selected color is used for the Answer dialog's background for the currently open file.  This background is also used in the editor for the Answer Text edit box and the Fill-In-The-Blank edit boxes. You can also create custom colors and save them for future use by clicking on the Define Custom Colors button in the Color Dialog.

Set Introduction Background Color **

Pressing this button opens the standard Windows color-selection dialog box.  The selected color is used for the Introduction dialog's background for the currently open file.  This background is also used in the editor for the Introduction edit box. You can also create custom colors and save them for future use by clicking on the Define Custom Colors button in the Color Dialog.

Note: Due to limitations inherent in the Windows edit control in some earlier versions of Windows, selecting any color background except one of the sixteen Windows Colors (in general the bolder, brighter colors) may result in the text's background being non-transparent - i.e. the text will appear to be typed on a ribbon of seemingly unrelated color.  You may or may not like the appearance of this feature, so experiment with which of the colors give you truly transparent text background.

Use Color Codes In Q&A Status Panels

Checking this box enables the color-coding functionality for the boxes on the status bar in the Q and A dialogs. If you aren't using a mode which benefits from this encoding, a more uniform blend with the selected skin can be achieved by leaving this box unselected.

Important Note: The default fonts for the Q's and A's are intentionally set to two different typefaces initially. This allows them to be modified independently. If they are ever set to the SAME typeface, the distinction between the fonts for the Q's and the A's is lost (for that particular study file) and you cannot then change them independently. If you attempt to set them to the same typeface, WinFlash will show a warning, but will allow you to proceed if you wish. If you are SURE you never wish to have the default font for the Q's be different in any way (including color, size, bolding, etc.) from the default font for the A's it is alright to go ahead and make them the same.

Beginning with v12, however, Scholar and Educator DO have the ability to separate Q's and A's that are initially set to the same default font, using the Batch Font Operations dialog, accessed from this panel.

Set Default Font For Questions

Pressing this button opens the standard Windows font-selection dialog box.  The selected font is used as the default to display the text of the Question and any associated Hints.  This font is also used in the editor for the Question Text edit box and the Multiple-Choice edit boxes. Of course fonts can be modified in the editor as desired using the font control buttons or by selecting the desired characters, right clicking and selecting the Font... option from the pop-up menu.

Set Default Font For Answers

Pressing this button opens the standard Windows font-selection dialog box.  The selected font is used as the default to display the text of the Answer and any associated Comments.  This font is also used in the editor for the Answer Text edit box and the Fill-In-The-Blank edit boxes. Of course fonts can be modified in the editor as desired using the font control buttons or by selecting the desired characters, right clicking and selecting the Font... option from the pop-up menu.

Set Font For Menus/Dialogs

Pressing this button opens the standard Windows font-selection dialog box.  The selected font is used to display the text in most sections of the dialogs and menus that are used with the program.  Starting with v6.0, the default setting for this font is Arial 8 Regular.  The dialogs are designed to accommodate fonts up to Arial 10 Bold (the setting for program versions prior to v6.0).  Adjust this font to the setting most comfortable for you.

Batch Font Operations *

Pressing this button opens the Batch Font Operations dialog box. This dialog allows forcing the text of all Questions, for instance, to the Question default font.  See Batch Font Operations for more details.

Font for Constructed Strings

Depending on the selected radio button, the "constructed strings" (e.g. the portion of an automatic FIB answer that reads "You could have answered with any of the following:") are displayed using the Menu font, Question default font or Answer default font - the last is the default selection.

Default Keyboard Layout **

These two settings allow a default keyboard layout to be assigned to the Questions (and all edit areas that use the Question font) and a different one to the Answer (and all edit areas that use the Answer font). See Foreign Language Keyboard Setup for information on how to add specific foreign language keyboard mappings to your computer.

* Scholar and Educator Only

** Educator Only
