WinFlash 6.0

Print this Topic Return to chapter overview

WinFlash v6.0 was a major upgrade incorporating the following new features and enhancements.

The ability to handle rich text format (.RTF) introductions and Q&A pair supplemental files created by the new WinFlash Educator v6.0 has been added.  This allows for mixed fonts, embedded graphics and other exciting OLE-based features such as equation editing in systems with Microsoft's Equation Editor available.

The maximum Q&A pair size has now been raised to 8200 characters (4095 characters maximum for the Q and A sections individually).  When combined with Educator's ability to create .RTF support files, each Q&A pair can contain virtually unlimited information.

A brand new audio feature - Cheers & Jeers - is available. Cheers play at a user-settable frequency when a question is answered correctly - Jeers play at an independent, user-settable frequency when a question is answered incorrectly.  There can be up to 20 Cheers and 20 Jeers available for use by each file.  These can be .wav files, hence easily recordable by the user for a custom cheering section!

Audio and video formats supported have been expanded to include Audio types : AIF*, AIFF*, ASF*, AU*, MPA*, MP2*, MP3*, RMI, SND, WAV and Video types: AVI, MOV, MPE*, MPEG*, MPG* or QT*.  * file types require that your system has the latest version of Microsoft's Media Player installed.  You can obtain this software directly from Microsoft's website at the URL:

 http://microsoft.com/windows/mediaplayer/download/default.asp

The Multiple Choice Q&A pair type has been enhanced to allow for more than one answer to be required - e.g. out of six possible answers the correct response might be "Answer 2 and Answer 4".  The user interface has been redesigned so that multiple buttons can be selected before submitting the answer.

The answers in a Multiple Choice Q&A pair can now be optionally randomized each time the Q&A pair is shown.  This prevents inadvertently learning the POSITION of the correct answer(s) instead of the CONTENT of the correct answer(s).

True/False is now available as a real Q&A pair type.

Multi-user mode is now available allowing separate statistics to be maintained for different individual's use of a single .FLU file.  This capability will be utilized by the new release of WinFlash Administrator, allowing progress report generation for individual users and reports summarizing progress by groups of users.  This capability uses the same 4-character base student ID that is also used in tests and in data entry in WinFlash Administrator, making it easy for students to remember their personal IDs.

An independent Add Pair At End function has been added to the original Insert Pair function, making it much easier to just add a Q&A pair at the end of the file

Printing has been greatly enhanced, now allowing Q-only and A-only tables as well as text cards printed double or single sided on standard business card stock.

Display MY Answer button has been added to the Answer dialog allowing the user to refer to their actual entry while viewing the answer result.

The Answer First, Followed By Question feature can now be set to occur at random. A review of vocabulary words where the foreign language word is sometimes given with the native language equivalent the required entry while other times the reverse order occurs is now possible.

Each Q&A pair's category designation can now contain up to 20 characters.  Each file can contain 100 categories.

In addition to setting the font for Q's and A's, it is now possible to set the font used by the program's dialogs.  The program ships with the font set to Arial 8 Point.  The previous releases have been set at Arial 10 Point Bold so if you prefer the "old" look you'll want to modify this setting.

The fill-in-the-blank answer is now cleared on a retry.  This is optional and can be set to the old, non-clearing behavior in Options|Misc.

The available Comment in the answer dialog can now be disabled if the question has been correctly answered.  This allows reserving comments for statements appropriate for the answer having been answered incorrectly.

All directory paths that are used in the various program dialogs can now be browsed for rather than requiring manual entry.

Auto-pilot mode now has both Stop and Pause controls.

Go To can now be set to continue with the series of Q&A pairs following the Go To OR to return to the next Q&A pair after the Q&A pair from which the Go To was launched.

Question and Answer text can now be vertically and/or horizontally centered.

Note: Old  .FLU files will work just fine with v6.0.  Simply open them with the new program and the new entries for the .FLD file will be automatically created the first time you open the file in v6.0.  However, files created with v6.0 may NOT be compatible when used with older versions.  See Backward Compatibility for detailed information on this topic.
