Print Cards Dialog (WinFlash Scholar/Educator Only)

Print this Topic Return to chapter overview

Main|File|Print Cards

The Print Cards dialog contains the options below for printing flashcards from your files.

Style

Two styles are available - text-only and graphics. Graphics includes any associated graphics file printed on the right-hand half of the card along with the text it's associated with - i.e. the Q or the A. Printout of the associated .RTF and .INT files can be obtained from the Print Tables dialog.

Alignment

This allows for centering the card text horizontally and/or vertically.  This option is ignored when printing graphics cards.

Font Sizes For Card Printing

This allows you to modify the font size for cards. The typeface of the font remains the same as the Q or A typeface used on the screen. If the All Forced To radio button is selected, the fonts will all be printed in the size entered in the box to the right, regardless of the size that they are when displayed in the Q or A dialog. This can be used to squeeze a lot of text onto a fixed card size.

Card Options

This chooses whether or not to print on both sides of the page when making your cards.

!!!! PLEASE BE SURE THAT YOUR PRINTER WILL NOT BE HARMED IF YOU CHOOSE TO USE THE TWO-PASS OPERATION !!!!

Open Window cannot be responsible for problems caused by this two-pass operation.  Consult your printer’s owner’s manual if you have any doubt!

If it is not advisable to print on both sides of the page, just choose Print One Side.  This will array the Q's and A's side-by-side (above and below on the 1X2 size setting).  You can then make your cards by simply folding the two joined parts of the Q&A pair in half, yielding a two-sided card.  You may also want to use this approach if you want your cards to be heavier than those resulting from two-sided printing.

Print Card Outlines

When selected this prints the outlines of the cards - making it easy to cut them apart neatly.  If you use a paper cutter for this chore, you may prefer to use the guidelines on the cutter and avoid any residue from the cut lines along the card edges.

Single Test Sheet

When selected this outputs a single sheet containing as many of the Q&A pairs at the front of the file as will fit on a page in the selected style.

Set Output Filtering

Opens the Filter dialog, allowing you to specify what types of Q&A pairs from the input file will be used for printing.  See Filter Settings for more detail on this operation.

Offset and Margin Adjustment

This setting allows you to correct for any built-in misalignment introduced by your printer.  Both the horizontal and vertical offset may be adjusted in 1/100 inch increments for optimizing the vertical and horizontal centering of the cards on the printed sheet.

The margin adjustment is used in the text mode only and determines how close the text is allowed to the edge of the card.

Scaling Adjustment

This setting allows the printing to be scaled by a percentage in both the horizontal and vertical dimensions.  Experiment with this if adjustment of the other settings doesn't produce the results you're looking for.

Card Material

This allows the choice of six different card sizes for multiple cards per page as well as the 1 Per Page setting. The latter setting allows manual feed of real flashcard stock (e.g. 2x5 and 4x6 card stock) and can be used with any size stock.  The program will automatically size to the page setting in the printer and use the Margin on Card setting for placement of text within the card's borders.

Note: Due to the poor implementation of some printer drivers, you MAY need to set the Page Size for using the 1 Per Page setting by using the Start|Settings|Printers and adjusting the selected printer's properties.  Some printers ignore the page size settings that are entered in the Printer Setup dialog accessed from within WinFlash itself.

Using the > 1 Per Page setting:

1x2 (4.0" x 6.0") is printed as the top and bottom halves of the page in portrait mode.  This yields either one card per sheet (Print One Side) or two cards per sheet (Print Both Sides). For stiffer cards, this setting can be used with "Tent Cards" - Avery #5389 or equivalent.

1x3  (3.0" x 5.0") MUST be used in Print Both Sides mode OR only the Questions printed.  This is because of the odd number of cards per sheet, making it impossible to print them as Q&A pairs and then fold them for use. For stiffer cards, this setting can be used with Avery #5388 or equivalent.

2x2 (4.25" x 5.5") is printed to the four quadrants of the page in landscape mode.  This yields either two cards per sheet (Print One Side) or four cards per sheet (Print Both Sides). For stiffer cards, this setting can be used with Avery "Small Postcards" - Avery #3263 or equivalent.

2x3 is printed as two columns of three positions in landscape mode.  This yields either three cards per sheet (Print One Side) or six cards per sheet (Print Both Sides). This size has no Avery equivalent.

All of the above settings can be used with either graphics or text cards.  The next two settings, because of their small size, are only usable in text mode.

2x4 (2.17" x 4.0") is printed as two columns of five positions in portrait mode.  This yields either four cards per sheet (Print One Side) or eight cards per sheet (Print Both Sides). For stiffer cards, this setting can be used with Avery "Office Cards" - Avery #5385 or equivalent.

2x5 (2.17" x 3.5") is the smallest size, printed as two columns of five positions in portrait mode.  This yields either five cards per sheet (Print One Side) or ten cards per sheet (Print Both Sides). For stiffer cards, this setting can be used with Avery "Business Cards" - Avery #5372 or equivalent.
