Tips On Using the WinFlash Editor

Print this Topic Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

We recommend using the built-in WinFlash editor to create and maintain your files because it has its own error-checking that helps prevent bad data from making its way into your work.  We hope you'll also find that the editor makes your work with your study files efficient and productive.

The quickest way to become familiar with the use of the editor is to step through the easy-to-follow project that starts with Your First WinFlash Study File!  You'll also note that the editor is equipped with program tips that display in small yellow boxes when you let the mouse rest on a particular control.  These give a brief description of the purpose of each of the controls.  If you decide you've seen enough of these and wish them not to appear, they may be disabled in the Options|View dialog.

The editor contains a vertical row of buttons used to apply font styles and effects to text selected in the edit boxes. These buttons are described in the Font Control topic.

When building files, it's quickest to learn the Shortcut Keys and use the tab key to move between edit boxes and leave the mouse alone.  For instance, if you were entering a vocabulary list, the sequence might go something like:

Open the editor.

Check Auto-save Edits and Auto-reset Page

Alt-l (Insert a new card at the end of the file)

Type in the Question - you're already focused in the Question edit box

Alt-a (Move  to Answer page);

Type in the Answer - you're already focused in the Answer edit box

Alt-l (Insert a new card at the end of the file)

 :

 :

etc.

As you can see - in this mode you need only type two additional keystrokes per Q&A pair (Alt-l and Alt-a) to continuously enter Q&A data.

Starting with v9.0 and the introduction of the QuickDeck tab in the editor an even quicker approach to text entry is available.  Simply check the Open To QuickDeck and Uncheck the Auto-reset Page check boxes (the default settings).  Go to the QuickDeck tab which displays the main text for BOTH the Q and A of the pair. Now continuous Q&A data can be entered as follows:

Type in the Question

Hit Tab

Type in the Answer

Hit Tab

 :

 :

etc.

The tab after the Answer entry will either move to the Question text of the next Q&A pair or insert a new Q&A pair at the end of the file and move to the Question of the newly-inserted Q&A pair. Typing Shift-Tab will move you back one panel in Quick Deck - i.e. to the Question from the Answer and to the previous pair's Answer from the current pair's Question.

Other standard Windows editing shortcut keys that are helpful in the editor are:

Ctrl-Right Arrow - Moves cursor one word to the right.

Ctrl-Shift-Right Arrow - Selects from cursor position to end of word.
